Polotsk-Steklovolokno OJSC has launched the production of basalt fiber using its own technology

JSC "Polotsk-Steklovolokno" has developed its own technology for the production of basalt fiber and has begun to release the first batches of pilot products, as reported by the chief engineer of the enterprise, Roman Bliznev.

The implementation of this innovative direction in the activities of JSC "Polotsk-Steklovolokno" began with the implementation of a project under the Union State program "Modern Technologies and Equipment for the Production of New Polymer and Composite Materials, Chemical Fibers and Threads for 2008-2012".

With the help of Russian partners, an experimental furnace for obtaining basalt threads and roving (a bundle of fibers not twisted together) from a natural material – extrusive magmatic rocks with a stable composition – was launched. Subsequently, specialists from the Polotsk enterprise significantly improved the proposed basic prototype on their own.

"Our specialists have developed a new design of slot feeders for basalt production. The technical solutions provide for the installation of a furnace for three spinning cells instead of one, an increase in productivity due to a larger furnace area, an increase in its service life, and gas savings. At the same time, one highly qualified operator – a 6th-grade – works at the unit. The duties of the glassmaker, who services the furnace for the production of silica threads, now include monitoring the processes in the new furnace," explained Roman Bliznev.

Investments amounted to about Br5.5 billion. The production capacity of the modified unit has increased several times and today amounts to 560 tons of basalt fiber per year. The development by designers and technologists of JSC "Polotsk-Steklovolokno" was put into operation recently - February 29, and in 10 days of operation, about 11 tons of products have already been produced on it. Basalt fibers are 10 times thinner than a hair, and at the same time they are environmentally friendly, durable, resistant even in aggressive environments, do not burn at all, the alloys of the rock itself are non-hygroscopic and do not release moisture. JSC has mastered the production of commercial roving and threads, and the first batches of basalt fiber fabric, experimental samples of non-woven needle-punched materials and chopped fiber have been produced. There are technical specifications for production, but ultimately all products will also undergo certification. The scope of application of the product is wide - from the oil and gas and chemical industries to automotive, construction and housing and communal services (for example, the production of reinforcement, nets and cloths for strengthening asphalt concrete pavements; as thermal and heat insulation for equipment and during work, as well as a filter for cleaning gases from dust at metallurgical plants). Sales specialists are studying the market, and there is already a monthly package of trial orders for a range of about 10 items. It is expected that the products will be in demand primarily in Belarus and Russia. There is already interest from Taiwanese partners, to whom the first batch of fiber for the production of insulating mats will be sent by the end of March. Roving supplies to Europe are planned.

Open Joint Stock Company "Polotsk-Steklovolokno" is one of the leading manufacturers of fiberglass and products based on it. It is a modern industrial complex with an area of 1 million

sq. m with over 1 thousand units of special equipment and 4 thousand employees. Cooperates with partners from over 50 countries. More than 90% of products are exported.
