April 25, Vitebsk / Sergey Kochetov - BELTA /. Eleven people were rescued from fires in the Vitebsk region over the past three days, and another 24 residents were evacuated from the scenes. This was reported to a BELTA correspondent by the center for propaganda and training at the regional department of the Ministry of Emergency Situations.
In Vitebsk, a drunk man almost burned down his own apartment and endangered his neighbors in a ten-story residential building. Police officers reported a fire in one of the apartments on the sixth floor of the high-rise building. Responding rescuers saved five people from neighboring apartments, including two children, and also evacuated 16 residents from the floors above, where there was heavy smoke. Property was destroyed in one of the rooms of the apartment, and the window unit, walls, and ceiling were damaged.
As established during the investigation, the owner of the apartment, born in 1970, left for work and armed the premises with a security alarm, while her drunk husband, born in 1964, remained at home. When the motion sensor was triggered in the apartment, security department employees arrived at the signal. Then, while police officers were drawing up an administrative protocol for a false alarm, the intoxicated owner unexpectedly doused a sofa with a flammable liquid and set it on fire. The police had to pull the drunk man out of the burning apartment, after which they handed him over to medics for hospitalization in the regional psychiatric hospital.
In addition, six more people were rescued from five other fires that occurred in the regional center, Shumilino, Polotsk, Chashniki, and Barani. In all cases, the cause of the fires, which almost ended tragically, was carelessness when smoking while intoxicated.
According to operational data, a total of 529 fires have occurred in the region since the beginning of the year, resulting in 102 deaths, including three children. -0-
