About 30 traffic accidents occurred in the Vitebsk region in January-March due to pedestrians

April 8, Vitebsk / Olga Bogacheva - BELTA /. About 30 accidents occurred in January-March on the roads of the Vitebsk region due to pedestrians, the head of the agitation and propaganda department of the traffic police of the Vitebsk Regional Executive Committee's Internal Affairs Directorate, Olesya Seregina, told a BELTA correspondent. As a result of these road traffic accidents, 11 people died and 18 were injured. Drivers were found to be responsible for 70 accidents, with two cases each attributed to persons without driver's licenses, cyclists, and motorcyclists. The main causes of accidents were driving into the oncoming lane, violation of traffic rules at pedestrian crossings, speeding, and maneuvering. In total, 118 road traffic accidents occurred in the region in the first quarter, which is 15% more compared to the same period last year. The increase in accidents is primarily due to the fact that after the winter period, drivers do not take into account the road situation and often overestimate their capabilities, noted Olesya Seregina. The accidents that occurred caused the deaths of 33 people, and 119 road users sustained injuries of varying severity. In nine cases, drivers fled the scene of the accident, leaving the victims without help. Children were injured in 14 road traffic accidents, one of them died, and 13 were injured. The most accident-prone times of the day in the past quarter were the intervals from 4 PM to 8 PM and from 12 PM to 4 PM, and the most dangerous days were Thursday and Sunday. -0-
