About two dozen bicycle parking spaces have been equipped at industrial and trade enterprises in the Vitebsk region for the Car-Free Day, the chief specialist of the Vitebsk Regional Committee for Natural Resources and Environmental Protection Tatyana Yasiulina told a BELTA correspondent. Temporary bicycle storage facilities have been put in order at Lukomlskaya GRES, OJSC Orsha Meat Canning Plant, RUP Orsha Tool Plant, OJSC Orsha Building Materials. For those motorists who decide to get to work by public transport instead of a bicycle or walking, the Vitebsk Tram and Trolleybus Administration and Vitebskoblautotrans will increase the number of trolleybuses and buses on city routes. Information hours and sports competitions timed to the international event will be held in educational institutions of the region. City and district nature protection inspectorates, together with traffic police officers, will hold the "Clean City" campaign. According to the Vitebsk Regional Committee for Natural Resources, drivers in the region supported last year's "Car-Free Day" campaign. On September 22, 2009, a five percent decrease in vehicles was noted at gas stations in the cities of the region, and the flow of vehicles on the roads during peak hours decreased by 10%. The International Car-Free Day was declared in 2000 by the European Environmental Agency. It is expected that in 2010, 1142 cities in 37 countries will participate in the campaign. -0-
