The first liver transplant operation was performed in Vitebsk
It was performed under the guidance and with the participation of Doctor of Medicine, Professor Eduard Matevosyan from the Technical University of Munich (Germany). The experimental model allows practicing the main stages of liver transplantation and overcoming the anatomical and technical difficulties that may arise during such operations in humans.
This event was preceded by numerous consultations with German doctors, including via teleconferences, which became possible thanks to the cooperation agreement between VSMU and the surgical clinic of Munich. The document provides for the development of contacts in academic and clinical practice areas, and the implementation of advanced scientific achievements in the field of treating liver and pancreatic diseases and organ transplantation. The VSMU administration constantly oversees this important area of activity. Necessary equipment and consumables were purchased, and the surgical technique was practiced.
For many patients with end-stage disease, transplantation is the only radical treatment method. Belarus is among the 30 most developed countries in the field of transplantology. These high-tech interventions are performed not only in the capital but also in the regions. For example, since September 2015, more than 40 kidney transplants have been performed at the Vitebsk Regional Clinical Hospital. And our specialists are moving forward in this direction.
