March 1, Vitebsk / Olga Bogacheva - BELTA /. An Orsha resident has been sentenced to a long prison term for attacking a traffic police officer in the Sennensky district, Deputy Prosecutor of the Vitebsk region Alexander Sidorovich told a BELTA correspondent.
The incident occurred near the village of Shilki, Sennensky district. Late at night, while on duty, a traffic police officer stopped a Peugeot car to check documents. The driver of the car, an 18-year-old Orsha resident, turned out to be drunk. After drawing up a report on an administrative offense, he was suspended from driving by a police officer's decision. To take the car to the impound lot, the traffic police officer got into the Peugeot, and offered the unfortunate driver to take a passenger seat in the service car. Enraged, the young man attacked the driver-volunteer and the police officer with a knife, inflicted several blows on them, and tried to escape in his car.
The offender did not manage to get far. Even with serious injuries, the traffic police officer managed to use his service weapon and shoot out the tires of the Peugeot.
For attempted murder of a law enforcement officer and a volunteer performing public duty, the young man was sentenced by the Vitebsk Regional Court to 13 years in prison. The sentence has not yet entered into legal force due to the defendant's right to appeal it. -0-
