The remains of civilians killed during the war were buried in the Ushachi district
The remains of civilians who died during the Great Patriotic War are buried in the civilian cemetery of the village of Rovby, Ushachi District.
The bones of the victims were found in August during search operations near the village of Zaborovnya, which were carried out as part of a criminal case on genocide during the war. Soldiers of the 52nd Separate Specialized Search Battalion exhumed the remains of approximately 8 people. These people died during a punitive operation in May 1944.
The Polotsk-Lepel partisan zone was one of the largest in the BSSR and covered the entire Ushachi District, parts of Polotsk, Glubokoye, Dokshitsy, Lepel, Beshenkovichi, and Shumilino districts. The headquarters of the partisan formation was located in Ushachi. More than 1.2 thousand settlements with a population of about 80 thousand people were located in this territory. The occupiers tried to clear their rear of partisans and in the spring of 1944 conducted a large punitive operation, with heavy fighting lasting 25 days. On the night of May 4-5, the partisans broke through the ring of fire, and more than 15 thousand civilians were able to escape with them.
– Years pass. But the memory of the Belarusian people is carefully preserved by their descendants. Our task remains unchanged – to preserve the true chronicle of the events of the Great Patriotic War, to honor the memory of the fallen defenders of the Fatherland and civilian victims, and to pass on the heroic heritage to our future generations, – emphasized Vladimir Terentyev, Chairman of the Vitebsk Regional Council of Deputies.
