The remains of St. Nicholas Cathedral in Vitebsk have been included in the list of historical and cultural heritage of Belarus
September 4, Vitebsk / Diana Kurilo - BELTA /. The remains of the foundation of the St. Nicholas Cathedral in Vitebsk have been included in the state list of historical and cultural heritage of Belarus. The decision of the Belarusian Republican Scientific and Methodological Council for Historical and Cultural Heritage under the Ministry of Culture is enshrined in a resolution of the Council of Ministers of Belarus, the chairman of the Vitebsk Regional Council of Deputies, Alexander Atyasov, told a BELTA correspondent.
The temple, built in the 18th-19th centuries and destroyed in 1956, is intended to be recreated by the city authorities. As reported by the first deputy director of the Capital Construction Department of the Vitebsk region, Alexander Zhartsov, financial support for this project will be provided from the regional budget. At the moment, a draft design of the temple has been prepared, in the implementation of which architects relied on old drawings and documents. Work on the architectural and construction projects is beginning.
The recreation of the St. Nicholas Cathedral will contribute to the return of Vitebsk's unique ancient appearance and will make the city even more attractive to tourists.
The stone temple was begun by the Jesuits in the early 18th century. They chose the location in the city center not by chance: since the 12th century, wooden Orthodox churches had been built here. In 1843, the temple was rebuilt and became known as the St. Nicholas Cathedral. At the end of the 19th century, the square in front of it began to be called Cathedral Square. Now it is Freedom Square. The territory is a historical zone.
The St. Nicholas Church is not the only historical and cultural value being revived in the regional center. This year, the Holy Resurrection Church was restored in its original form, and work is being completed in the Holy Assumption Cathedral, one of the most beautiful architectural monuments of the 18th-19th centuries.
885 real estate objects of the Vitebsk region have been included in the state list of historical and cultural heritage, of which 279 are architectural monuments. -0-
