A monument to Alexander Nevsky will appear in Vitebsk
June 17, Vitebsk / Diana Kurilo - BELTA /. The Vitebsk City Executive Committee has decided to hold a competition for the creation of a monument project to Saint Right-Believing Prince Alexander Nevsky, Vladimir Terentyev, Head of the Culture Department of the Vitebsk City Executive Committee, told a BELTA correspondent.
The name of the brave warrior and prudent politician Alexander Yaroslavovich is associated with both Russian and Belarusian history. Pursuing a policy of uniting forces against Swedish-German expansion, the Novgorod prince maintained close contacts with Polotsk. In 1239, he married Princess Paraskeva (Alexandra) of Polotsk, the daughter of Bryachislav of Polotsk. According to some sources, the wedding of the young couple took place in Vitebsk in the Annunciation Church. His son, Vasily, ruled in Vitebsk. Alexander Nevsky is one of the princes particularly revered by the church as a saint, which is why the Vitebsk Orthodox Diocese, along with the Vitebsk City Executive Committee, acted as organizers of the competition.
Professional sculptors, architects, and artists are invited to participate in the competition. Contestants are asked not only to artistically embody the image of the historical figure but also to propose a location for the monument. The competition will be held from July 1 to December 1. Winners and prize-winners will be announced no later than December 24. The winner will receive the right to implement their project, as well as a cash prize of Br3.5 million. Authors of projects that win second and third prizes will receive awards of Br2 million and Br1.5 million, respectively. -0-
