August 19, Vitebsk / Diana Kurilo - BELTA /. A monument to Nicholas the Wonderworker will be erected in Polotsk on the eve of the visit of Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia, the chief specialist of the Polotsk City Executive Committee Stanislav Krassovsky told a BELTA correspondent.
The cast monument will be delivered from Moscow to Polotsk at the end of August. The Russian charitable foundation of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker took on all the work on its creation. Currently, landscaping work is underway in Polotsk to prepare a site for the monument. The monument will be installed near the Holy Euphrosyne Monastery, on the site of a destroyed monastery chapel, where the last stop was made in 1910 before the relics of St. Euphrosyne of Polotsk were delivered to the monastery from the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra.
As Stanislav Krassovsky noted, the name of Nicholas the Wonderworker has special significance for ancient Polotsk. St. Nicholas embodies the protection of the Fatherland and Faith, and Polotsk is a city of warriors. Polotsk banners participated in the Battle of Kulikovo, the Battle of Grunwald, the Livonian War, the Northern War with the Swedes, and the Patriotic War of 1812. In addition, every year on the feast day of St. Nicholas, December 19, students of Polotsk Secondary School No. 4 take an oath as cadets. This date was the church and corps holiday of the Polotsk Cadet Corps, one of the oldest military educational institutions in the country, which celebrates its 175th anniversary this year. For a long time, the St. Nicholas Cathedral operated in Polotsk, which the city authorities intend to restore.
It is planned that Patriarch Kirill's visit to Belarus will take place from September 25 to 28. The Primate of the Russian Orthodox Church intends to visit the Minsk, Polotsk, and Vitebsk eparchies. The preliminary program of the visit includes meetings with the clergy and public of Belarus, familiarization with the life of Orthodox communities, and the performance of divine services. -0-
