The monument to the last Prince of Polotsk, Andrei Olgerdovich, a hero of the Battle of Kulikovo, will be unveiled in Polotsk

May 25, Vitebsk / Diana Kurilo - BELTA /. The monument to the last prince of Polotsk, the hero of the Battle of Kulikovo, Andrei Olgerdovich, will be solemnly unveiled on the day of the celebration of the 1147th anniversary of Polotsk, the chief specialist of the Polotsk City Executive Committee Stanislav Krasovsky told a BELTA correspondent. According to the interlocutor, the shadow of his famous father, the Grand Duke of Lithuania Algirdas, still prevents historians and descendants from properly appreciating the merits of Andrei of Polotsk, a great warrior and strategist. Andrei Olgerdovich fought against the Livonian Order. However, the Battle of Kulikovo brought him the glory of a hero. The feat of Andrei and his brother Dmitry is glorified in the famous literary monument "Zadonschina". The unknown medieval author rightfully put the following words into the mouth of the prince of Polotsk: "Brother Dmitry, we are two brothers, sons of Algirdas, and grandsons of Gediminas, and great-grandsons of Skolomend. Let us gather, brother, the beloved lords of valiant Lithuania, brave warriors, and let us mount our swift horses and look at the swift Don, drink water from it with our helmets, test our Lithuanian swords on Tatar helmets, and our German javelins on the chain mail of the infidels!" Leading the right-hand regiment, Andrei Olgerdovich held back the Tatar onslaught, "...not only attacked the Tatars and killed many...", and when the Russian ambush regiment rushed into the attack, he supported its victorious advance. The glorious warrior died on August 12, 1399, in the battle with Timur-Qutlugh Tatars on the Vorskla River. He was 74 years old. The three-meter monument to the last prince of Polotsk will be installed in the old part of Polotsk, on the bank of the Western Dvina near the Epiphany Cathedral. Funds for its construction were transferred to the city by one of the Polotsk entrepreneurs. In addition to the monument, the patron created an exhibition dedicated to the history of Polotsk in the 14th century. Its opening is also planned during the City Day celebration. This year, Polotsk will pay tribute to two more of its famous children. At the end of August, a monument to the architect Ioann, the author of the Transfiguration Church of the St. Euphrosyne Monastery, will appear in the city, and in September, a bust of the founder of Belarusian cinema, Soviet director and screenwriter Yuri Tarich will be unveiled. As Stanislav Krasovsky said, there are about 20 monuments and sculptures in the city associated with the history and culture of the ancient Belarusian land. Among them, the interlocutor named monuments to Euphrosyne of Polotsk, Prince Vseslav Bryacheslavich nicknamed the Sorcerer, Francysk Skaryna, Symeon of Polotsk, sculptures of the Krivichi - ancestors of modern Belarusians, a funny monument to a cunning Polotsk merchant, a sculptural composition in honor of the Belarusian letter "ў", and a memorial sign "Geographic Center of Europe". All of them have become favorites of tourists and have become a mandatory background for amateur photographs.
