A monument to the great Lithuanian hetman Lew Sapieha will be unveiled in Lepel

September 7, Vitebsk / Diana Kurilo - BELTA /. A monument to politician, diplomat, and creator of the third Statute of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, Lev Sapega, will be unveiled in Lepel. The solemn ceremony will take place on September 11 and will kick off festive celebrations in honor of Lepel's birthday, Igor Urban, head of the ideological work department of the Lepel District Executive Committee, told a BELTA correspondent. In historical chronicles, many Belarusian geographical names are mentioned alongside the name of Lev Sapega. Among them are Ostrovno (now a village in the Beshenkovichi district of the Vitebsk region) - the place where he was born; Orsha, where he began his state service; Slonim (Grodno region), which received its coat of arms from its elder, Lev Sapega; Ruzhany (Brest region), where the great chancellor of the GDL built his residence. Lepel also found its place in this list. In 1586, Lev Sapega, whose patrimony included the lands of Lepel, decided that a different location would be more convenient for the city of Lepel. He moved the market stalls and churches three kilometers away and named this place New Lepel. Since then, Lepel has not changed its location, and only the preserved name of the village of Stary Lepel reminds of its original location. Despite the fact that Lev Sapega moved Lepel while he was still vice-chancellor of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, his descendants decided to immortalize him in hetman attire, with a mace and a saber - attributes of hetman power, which were presented to him in 1625. The three-meter bronze monument, which will adorn the entrance to the city park, was created by sculptor Lev Oganov. -0-
