The partisan Rossony region was awarded a pennant for courage and resilience during the Great Patriotic War
May 9, Vitebsk / Diana Kurilo - BELTA /. The heroic Rossony district was awarded the pennant "For Courage and Resilience during the Great Patriotic War" and a certificate of honor today, Irina Gvozdeva, head of the ideological work department of the Rossony District Executive Committee, told a BELTA correspondent.
For four years, the district was occupied by German troops. However, despite this, as early as the spring of 1942, underground groups switched to open struggle against the enemy. The first victory was won by partisan detachments under the command of Pyotr Masherov, Ivan Zakharov, and a group of Latvian partisans in June 1942, defeating an enemy garrison. The partisan movement grew into a nationwide struggle against the fascists, thanks to which by the end of 1942, Rossony, Osvy, and Drissa districts were liberated from the enemy, and a little later, in 1943, a fraternal partisan territory was formed at the junction of three Soviet republics - Belarus, Russia, and Latvia. 28 partisan brigades and 40 detachments operated here.
The ceremony of awarding the high honor marked the beginning of celebrations on the occasion of the 65th anniversary of the victory of the Soviet people over the German fascist invaders.
By Decree of the President of Belarus of April 19, 2010, No. 189, three settlements in the Vitebsk region were awarded the pennant "For Courage and Resilience during the Great Patriotic War" and a certificate of honor - the city of Lepel, the settlements of Surazh and Rossony. In the year of the 65th anniversary of the liberation of Belarus from the German fascist invaders, the pennant and certificate were awarded to Vitebsk, Polotsk, Orsha, Begoml, and Ushachi. -0-
