A memorial plaque was unveiled to Semyon Krylov, the first military commissar of the Vitebsk province

Первому военкому Витебской губернии Семёну Крылову установили мемориальную доску
A memorial plaque dedicated to Semyon Krylov, the first military commissar of Vitebsk Governorate, has appeared in the regional center.

The commemorative sign is installed on the street named in honor of the military commissar.

— Last year marked the 100th anniversary of the establishment of military commissariats in Belarus. Together with the regional and city executive committees, and the faculty of PSU named after P. Masherov, we carried out extensive archival and research work. We managed to establish a number of previously unknown facts. In particular, we learned that the military commissariat of the Vitebsk region was established on May 21, 1918. Semyon Krylov and Vitovt Putna became the first provincial commissars, — said the military commissar of the region, Ruslan Shkodin. — Semyon Nikolaevich was an active participant in the revolutionary movement and the establishment of Soviet power in our region. Under his leadership, military units of the province, which was a front-line zone at the time, were formed. Work was also carried out with prisoners of war and people liberated from the Germans.

Ruslan Nikolaevich emphasized that the street was named after Krylov in 1974, but initially it was associated by local residents not with the commissar, but with the fabulist. Only after the collapse of the Soviet Union, the advent of the internet, and the declassification of archives did historical justice prevail.

Representatives of local authorities, military commissariats, and public organizations participated in the opening ceremony of the memorial plaque.
