The first improvement campaigns for memorable places and memorials took place in the Vitebsk region
The Vitebsk region today hosted the first events to improve memorial sites and memorial complexes. In anticipation of the Day of Remembrance of the Victims of Khatyn, labor brigades were tidying up memorial complexes in the Dokshitsky and Chashniksky districts.
"A place of pain and grief, where you keenly feel the fragility and value of human life, realize the value of a peaceful path of development for your country, and measure your personal spiritual values against a standard," – this is how Olga Talyaronok, director of the Begoml Museum of Folk Glory, briefly described the "Curse of Fascism" memorial complex at the site of the village of Shunovka. According to her, this is the first cleanup event after winter, which is held annually in the district in anticipation of the Day of Remembrance of the Victims of Khatyn:
– In the Dokshitsky district, fascist invaders burned down 132 villages, and over 20,000 civilians were killed. Three villages – Azartsy, Zolotukhi, and Shunovka – were burned down with their inhabitants. They never rose from the ashes. This land has become a symbol of the courage and resilience of our countrymen. It is deeply symbolic for me that the spring events for landscaping and tidying up memorial complexes begin precisely with such memorable places.
On March 9, a requiem rally honored the memory of the 114 burned residents of the village of Vishenki in the Chashniksky district. And today, on this sacred land, where the memorial complex of the same name is now located, a subbotnik (volunteer work day) was also held. Employees of the Department of Ideological Work, Culture and Youth Affairs of the district executive committee, activists of the BRSM, students of the Tyapin Secondary School, and volunteers from public organizations were engaged in improving the territory. A larger-scale subbotnik is planned here in April with the involvement of sponsor organizations for planting flowers, whitewashing trees, and other minor work. "This is one of the most tragic places of remembrance of the events of the Great Patriotic War in my homeland," – emphasized Alina Khripach, an 11th-grade student of Secondary School No. 1 in Chashniki. The girl takes an active part in public life, often with friends and like-minded enthusiasts, she helps to tidy up memorials and organize star hikes along the routes of military glory:
/>– It is important not only to remember the events of the war years, but also to back up your words and beliefs with actions. It is through actions that a person's personality and character are formed. For us, Belarusians, such places will always be anchors that will prevent the history of the Great Patriotic War from being distorted and the truth from being substituted.
