Half of the decade's rainfall norm fell in Vitebsk in one day

Половина декадной нормы осадков выпала за сутки в Витебске

Half of the ten-day precipitation norm fell in Vitebsk in one day, leading engineer-meteorologist of the Vitebsk Regional Center for Hydrometeorology and Environmental Monitoring Lyudmila Borodenok told a BELTA correspondent.

Winter, which came to Belarus this year in accordance with its calendar start, began in the Vitebsk region with heavy snowfall. In the past day alone, a cyclone brought half of the ten-day precipitation norm to the region. At the same time, the snow cover depth in the regional center by the end of the first ten days of December exceeded the required norm by 2.5 times, amounting to 18 cm. "Meanwhile, it is too early to talk about records: the record snow depth for all years of meteorological observation of 29 cm was recorded in Vitebsk on December 11, 1988," noted Lyudmila Borodenok.

The highest snow cover level has currently formed in the extreme southwest of the region: in Lyntupy, Postavsky district, it reaches 23 cm.

In the coming days, according to meteorologists' forecasts, snowfall will continue in the region. By the end of the week, with the arrival of a Siberian anticyclone, the amount of precipitation will decrease, but a cold snap will come.

Heavy snowfall has added work for utility services. Thus, 140 employees of UP "Gordormost" are involved in snow removal in the regional center today. For the efficiency of street cleaning, their work regime has been temporarily switched to enhanced. In addition to its own equipment, "Gordormost" has additionally involved transport from various state transport enterprises of the city for snow removal. In general, the work is being carried out in the normal operational mode, noted the Vitebsk City Executive Committee.
