The thief managed to steal two armchairs from a store in Vitebsk
October 11, Vitebsk / Olga Bogacheva - BELTA /. Robbery and theft have been solved in Vitebsk thanks to video surveillance systems, the Public Relations and Information Department of the Vitebsk Regional Executive Committee's Internal Affairs Directorate told a BELTA correspondent.
One of the crimes was committed in a furniture store. A young man, taking advantage of a moment when the sales assistants were distracted, stole two armchairs worth over Br700,000 each from the store. Employees of the criminal investigation department of the Pervomaisky District Department of Internal Affairs, after reviewing the footage from the video surveillance cameras installed in the store, established that a local resident was involved in the theft. The 30-year-old man had previously come to the attention of the police for petty theft in stores. He faces up to four years in prison for the theft.
Another incident occurred on Kutuzov Street. A criminal snatched a handbag from the hands of an elderly resident of the regional center and fled. A police unit that arrived at the scene attempted to reconstruct the circumstances preceding the robber's attack. It turned out that the victim was walking from a grocery store. The assumption that the attacker had been following his victim from there was subsequently confirmed. On the video footage from the store's surveillance camera, the attention of police officers was drawn to a man in his forties who was near the woman when she was making purchases. The sales assistant also recalled that the man had quickly disappeared somewhere and then reappeared: his acquaintance remained in the store. The couple left in a hurry. After carefully examining the scene of the attack, officers found torn handles from the handbag, a wallet, and a bank card. The robber's haul was not significant - Br25,000.
Within six hours, the identity of the perpetrator was established. He turned out to be a local resident with multiple convictions, who is currently the director of a limited liability company. A criminal case has been initiated against the suspect under Article 206, Part 2 of the Criminal Code of the Republic of Belarus, which provides for a maximum penalty of up to six years of imprisonment. -0-
