A project to address environmental problems in the Disna River basin is launching in Belarus, project manager Anton Rodnenkov told BELTA .

The project "Small Rivers - Big Problems: Working Together for the Protection and Future of Small Rivers in the Disna River Basin" is designed for two years and will be implemented in the Gluboksky, Postavsky, and Sharkovshchinsky districts of the Vitebsk region. In these regions, it is planned to create a network of environmental posts and youth environmental inspectorates. Young environmentalists will subsequently take an active part in the campaign to monitor and clean up small tributaries of the Disna, improve recreational areas, and develop an action plan for effective management of small rivers.

Anton Rodnenkov emphasized that during the project implementation, special attention will be paid to raising the environmental awareness of children and adults, and attracting public attention to the problems of small rivers. For example, environmental classes will be held in schools for youth and students, and a photo and essay contest will be organized, with the best participants invited to a special summer camp.

The main goal of the project is to strengthen environmental control and create conditions for the sustainable development of small water bodies in the three districts of the Vitebsk region. The first meeting of the project's steering committee and a working meeting of experts will take place in Glubokoye on July 25-26.

The project "Small Rivers - Big Problems: Working Together for the Protection and Future of Small Rivers in the Disna River Basin" is being implemented by the European Union with the support of the international environmental public association "Nature and Us," the Gluboksky, Postavsky, and Sharkovshchinsky District Executive Committees, and the local fund for promoting international dialogue and cooperation "Interakcia."
