A project to preserve the continuity of crafts is being launched in the Vitebsk region

The Vitebsk Regional Methodological Center is launching a project to preserve folk crafts and author's techniques with the decorative and applied arts exhibition-competition "From Master to Student", the institution reported.

Today marks the opening of the first exhibition of the project, which will feature collections of works by masters and their apprentices in straw weaving, pottery, ceramics, clay toys, wood carving, painted carpets ("malyavanka"), patchwork, and knitting.

In addition, five masters with their students from the Lepel and Chashniki Houses of Crafts, as well as the cultural and historical complex "Golden Ring of Vitebsk City "Dvina"" will conduct master classes, where they will present their author's teaching methods for their craft. Similar master classes, but from other authors, will be held in the center's exhibition hall weekly. "This is the first competition and, accordingly, the first exhibition; there will be others in the future. Thus, we track the continuity in craftsmanship so that masters train their successors, thereby preserving the characteristic features of the craft in their locality, as well as author's methods. Therefore, the competition jury will evaluate not only the collections of works themselves but also the theoretical methodological material, as well as the specifics of working with students in master classes. Winners will be determined in all three categories, and the one who excels in all components will receive the Grand Prix," the organizers explained.
