The Vitebsk Regional Prosecutor's Office proposes to publicize the incomes of candidates for leadership positions in the media
The Vitebsk Region Prosecutor's Office proposes to publicize the incomes of candidates for leadership positions in the media. The department intends to submit this initiative to the Prosecutor General's Office of Belarus in the near future, the First Deputy Prosecutor of the Vitebsk Region, Alexander Sidorovich, told a BELTA correspondent.
"Publicizing income declarations of candidates for leadership positions in the media is considered a normal practice in the West, and recently it has become widespread in Russia as well. It seems expedient to introduce such an approach in our country. On the one hand, it will allow the appointee to be more open to the public, and on the other hand, it will become a preventive measure against corruption," believes Alexander Sidorovich.
These proposals, among a number of others, are intended to be sent by the Vitebsk Region Prosecutor's Office to the Prosecutor General's Office in order to increase the effectiveness of the fight against corruption.
"The need for additional measures in this area of work is due to the increase in detected corruption crimes," emphasized the First Deputy Prosecutor of the region. In January-April 2013, 149 corruption crimes were registered in the region, which is 8% more compared to the same period last year. The largest number of them is related to bribery and embezzlement through abuse of official powers. Among the most corrupt sectors are industry, construction, healthcare, and the agro-industrial complex.
