Afghan war veterans discussed rehabilitation, monument construction, and participation in elections at a meeting in the regional executive committee

On the eve of the Day of the Withdrawal of Soviet Troops from Afghanistan, a meeting of the council of the regional organization of veterans of the war in Afghanistan was held. As part of the event, members of the public association met with the leadership of the regional executive committee and medical institutions and discussed the rehabilitation, health improvement, and treatment of combatants in foreign countries.

— The state provides the necessary social support to veterans and families of the deceased. Thus, traditionally, by February 15, material assistance is provided to disabled veterans due to combat injuries, parents, and widows of the deceased. This year, they were paid 5 base amounts each. Local authorities also solve the pressing problems of internationalists: they assist in employment, refer those in need to health resorts and hospitals, help with firewood delivery and housing repairs, and invite them to various concerts and celebrations, — said Valerian Matskevich, Chairman of the regional organization of the Belarusian Union of Veterans of the War in Afghanistan. — In general, the work in this direction is established; it is only necessary to strengthen the interaction of interested departments to speed up the consideration of emerging issues.

The meeting also touched upon the topic of elections to local Councils of Deputies. "Afghans" will take an active part in the campaign. Five of them intend to become deputies, about twenty are members of election commissions at various levels, and over a hundred will be observers.

Valerian Albinovich asked his colleagues from the regional branches to intensify their efforts in collecting funds from organization members and local residents to finance the "Paratrooper" monument, so that the Park of Victory in Vitebsk finally gets a monument dedicated to the airborne forces.

At the end of the meeting, a round table was held with the participation of the leadership of the largest public organizations in the region, during which they discussed how to make activities for civil and military-patriotic education more effective and interesting for the younger generation.
