Two Russian citizens have each been sentenced to 10 years in prison for a robbery at a Vitebsk church, Dmitry Orekhva, Deputy Prosecutor of Vitebsk, told a BELTA correspondent.

The court found them guilty of robbery and extortion.

The crime was committed in the autumn of last year. Two unemployed individuals found temporary shelter in a Vitebsk church, where they were also provided with money for food. However, the meal was accompanied by alcohol, and the intoxicated travelers, threatening a parishioner with a knife, stole money from him, as well as funds donated to the church, totaling about Br7 million. This was not enough for the ungrateful guests, and they demanded that the victim also arrange a loan in their favor for up to Br30 million.

For the crime, due to its particular danger and audacity, the Russians were sentenced to 10 years of imprisonment with confiscation of property and serving their sentence in a high-security correctional colony.
