The leadership of the Vitebsk region sent an appeal on the occasion of the International Day of Remembrance of the Chernobyl Disaster
Dear residents of the Vitebsk region!
On April 26, we commemorate the International Day of Remembrance of the Chernobyl Disaster.
35 years ago, in 1986, this date became a black milestone in the history of our country. In those unforgettable days, millions of people were exposed to radiation, tens of thousands lost their health and homes. Chernobyl became a severe trial and a cruel lesson for Belarusians, Ukrainians, and Russians.
The main radiation impact fell on our republic, as did the subsequent liquidation of its consequences.
The Vitebsk region, fortunately, was least affected by the consequences of the disaster; the soil, forests, and water resources were not contaminated by radioactive emissions. Our health resorts – sanatoriums, children's rehabilitation centers – have consistently participated in health improvement programs for citizens living in affected areas throughout the period after the disaster. The region has accepted over 1.5 thousand resettlers from radiation-contaminated areas for permanent residence. The Pridvinsky region has long become a native home for them, their children, and grandchildren.
The Chernobyl disaster is a shared pain for our people. We are grateful to everyone who helps Belarusians overcome it. We remember those who bore the brunt of the tragedy, who gave their lives participating in the liquidation of the worst man-made disaster of the XX century. Among the liquidators of the accident were many residents of the Vitebsk region. Thank you all for your selfless work and courage.
We wish you health, family well-being, success in your work, and good luck in all your endeavors!
