Schoolchildren from Shumilino district will demonstrate their skills in rapid bicycle assembly

September 21, Vitebsk / Olga Bogacheva - BELTA /. Almost everyone knows how to ride a bicycle, but not everyone can assemble this means of transport from spare parts. On Car-Free Day, schoolchildren from the Shumilino district of the Vitebsk region will prove that they can do both with equal skill, Yulia Galuzo, second secretary of the Shumilino district committee of the BRSM, told a BELTA correspondent. More than 30 young men from various schools in the district will take part in the "Chasing Clean Air" tournament. The participants will compete in two age categories: 14-16 years old and 17-18 years old. Initially, in the park in Shumilino, they will have to demonstrate bicycle handling skills and the ability to quickly assemble their "iron horse," and then compete in a 5 km race. Winners in each category will be awarded diplomas and prizes. The event is organized by the district committee of the BRSM, the department of natural resources and environmental protection, and the Shumilino traffic police department. Events dedicated to Car-Free Day will be held in all districts of the region. Their main goal is to promote a healthy lifestyle, as well as to draw public attention to environmental safety issues. Despite the fact that in the Vitebsk region, the share of transport in total pollutant emissions is 53%, and in cities it ranges from 65% to 85%, 364 tons of pollutants are released into the atmosphere per day on average. Therefore, the Vitebsk Regional Committee of Natural Resources and Environmental Protection urges all residents of the region not to use their cars on September 22, but to walk, switch to bicycles, or, as a last resort, use public transport. -0-
