A resident of Vitebsk who fled the scene of a road traffic accident after hitting a cyclist has been sentenced to a long prison term, Dmitry Orekhvo, senior prosecutor of the department for supervision of the legality of court decisions in criminal cases and analysis of judicial practice of the Vitebsk Regional Prosecutor's Office, told a BELTA correspondent. While intoxicated, a 37-year-old driver from Vitebsk Universal Base decided to get behind the wheel of his personal car. During the trip, the man hit an elderly cyclist and fled the scene of the accident. The pensioner died from his injuries at the scene. Law enforcement officers managed to track down the Vitebsk resident. For violating traffic rules, which resulted in a person's death, he was sentenced to four years in prison. Since the beginning of the year, a total of 46 road traffic accidents have occurred on the roads of the Vitebsk region due to drunk drivers, in which 9 people died and 48 were injured. 39 accidents were caused by drivers who fled the scene, resulting in 10 fatalities and 36 injuries.
