January 26, Minsk / Vladimir Matveev - BELTA /. Ministry of Emergency Situations rescuers saved 36 people in a fire at a Vitebsk dormitory. This was reported to a BELTA correspondent by Vitaly Novitsky, press secretary of the Ministry of Emergency Situations of Belarus. The report of a fire on Dovator Street in a room on the first floor of a three-story dormitory building of the Vitebsk State Academy of Veterinary Medicine was received at 22:31. "The alarm went off, and several calls were also received from the residents themselves," the Ministry of Emergency Situations noted. 12 units of equipment with combat crews and 6 ambulance teams were dispatched to the scene to extinguish the fire. By the time of arrival at the scene, the room on the first floor was on fire, and the flames were penetrating to the second floor. The dormitory corridors were also heavily smoked. "Due to the smoke, people could not leave the dormitory building on their own through the evacuation routes. Using a fire truck ladder and extendable three-section ladders, Ministry of Emergency Situations employees rescued 36 people who were in the building," said Vitaly Novitsky. He also explained that the dormitory is designed for 218 people, but due to the holidays, only 36 people were in it at the time of the fire. 4 people were injured. Two of them are residents of the room where the fire broke out. They suffered from carbon monoxide poisoning and were hospitalized in moderate condition. Another young man received a cut on his hand, and one of the students broke her ankle. The cause of the fire is currently being determined. The property in the room where the fire broke out was completely destroyed. The ceiling between the first and second floors was damaged, and the corridors on all three floors were smoked. The rescued people were temporarily accommodated in other dormitories of the educational institution. -0-
