This was announced today by the Chairman of the Vitebsk Regional Executive Committee, Alexander Kosinets, at a meeting on the prevention of drunkenness, crimes and other offenses, according to a BELTA correspondent. Domestic violence is quite widespread, often associated with drunkenness, and in such cases, women and children suffer the most. In the past year alone, 459 people in the Vitebsk region were brought to justice under preventive articles of the Criminal Code. "Everything necessary must be done to prevent such offenses," the governor emphasized. To determine the depth of this problem in the region, he instructed the ideological work department of the regional executive committee to conduct a relevant sociological study. At the same time, to cover the topic as fully as possible, it is necessary to take a sample of women by professional affiliation, education level, age, and other parameters, Alexander Kosinets added. In addition, law enforcement officers need to intensify their work on preventing domestic violence. According to the Vitebsk Regional Prosecutor's Office, 350 crimes were committed in the sphere of family and domestic relations in the region in 2009. An increase in the number of such offenses is noted in 10 regions of the area, including the most significant ones in Gluboksky, Tolochinsky, Dokshitsky districts, Novopolotsk and Pervomaisky district of Vitebsk. -0-
