The Yakub Kolas National Theatre is celebrating the anniversary of a legendary play based on the work of Vitaly Volsky.
This coming Saturday, May 21, the Kolas Theatre company will present the production that has become the theatre's hallmark and has been on stage for 75 years – "Nesterka". The premiere took place on May 18, 1941, during a tour in Petrozavodsk. Over the past years, several generations of actors have been involved in the play. The main role was once played by People's Artists of the USSR Alexander Ilyinsky and Fyodor Shmakov, and People's Artist of Belarus Yevgeny Shipilo.
It so happened that this year, when the theatre celebrates its 90th anniversary, the anniversaries of the landmark play and its creators are also being celebrated. In particular, the 125th anniversary of the birth of the production director, Honored Artist of Arts, laureate of the USSR State Prize Naum Loiter, the 115th anniversary of the birth of the playwright Vitaly Volsky, and the 110th anniversary of the renowned Belarusian composer Isaac Lyuban, who wrote the music for "Nesterka".
