A list of museum valuables of Belarus may be created by 2013, Viktor Kurash, Deputy Minister of Culture of Belarus, expressed this opinion today at a meeting of the board of the Vitebsk Regional Executive Committee's Culture Department, a BELTA correspondent reports. As the Deputy Minister noted, the work on creating a state museum catalog will not be completed in 2010. To create it, a good technical base is needed – powerful computers, a sophisticated program. For example, in Russia, work on a state museum catalog has been underway for 15 years. And, according to experts, it is unlikely to be a document of strict accountability; rather, it will be an electronic database. In Belarus, it is also possible to create an electronic database of the most valuable museum exhibits in the near future, Viktor Kurash believes. "It is necessary that with the help of the Internet, anyone can get acquainted with the treasury of Belarus from anywhere in the world, so that they want to see everything with their own eyes by coming to our country," he said. The creation of a complete list of museum valuables of Belarus is possible as early as 2013. The Ministry of Culture is aware of the problems that museums face when creating electronic databases and is refining the software product together with developers. There are 27 museums and 25 museum branches in the Vitebsk region. They house 530 thousand items, of which only 12% have been entered into the electronic catalog. -0-
