A stylized model of a printing press from the time of Francis Skaryna was created in Polotsk
The creation of the press is one of the stages of the art project "Polotsk Typography," which is being implemented by the staff of the Polotsk Children's Art School specifically for the 500th anniversary of Belarusian book printing. The institution decided that the descendants of Skaryna should know how the first printed books of Belarus were created. In order to master the art of book printing, children studied various graphic techniques and created creative compositions of print graphics, and the school's teacher, Dmitry Svyatsky, made a real press for printing engravings.
"The uniqueness of the press lies in the fact that it is created as a stylized model of a printing press from the times of Francis Skaryna and Johannes Gutenberg," the press service emphasized. "The project participants mastered graphic techniques such as linocut, engraving on plaster and cardboard, printing using stencils, templates, and carbon paper. In total, several hundred works were printed by students and teachers."
The final stage of the art project "Polotsk Typography" will be a thematic art exhibition during the Day of Belarusian Written Language in Polotsk. A print graphics exhibition will be presented here, and master classes on printing engravings will be held. Polotsk assures that all participants and guests of the festival will have the opportunity to print a small composition with their own hands on the model of the printing press from Skaryna's time.
