Construction of the Vitebsk Hydroelectric Power Station on the Western Dvina has been completed

The commissioning act for the Vitebsk Hydroelectric Power Station has been signed today. This was announced to journalists by the Minister of Energy Vladimir Potupchik, who took part in a ceremonial event dedicated to the launch of a new substation in the Postavy district of the Vitebsk region.

"At this very moment, another important event for our energy system has taken place - the commissioning act for the Vitebsk HPP was signed. This is a landmark facility, which we also built together with our Chinese partners. It is the largest hydroelectric power station in the Belarusian energy system, with a capacity of 40 MW," the minister said.

The capacity of the Vitebsk HPP is sufficient to provide electricity to consumers in the Vitebsk region. Its operation will reduce the consumption of imported natural gas, which will enhance the country's energy security. RUP "Vitebskenergo" began the implementation of the investment project "Construction of the Vitebsk HPP on the Western Dvina River in the Vitebsk Region" in 2010. The general contractor for the construction was the foreign contracting organization "China National Electric Equipment Corporation" (CNEEC). During the construction phase, representatives of CNEEC, whose equipment is installed at the HPP, were involved in servicing the facility together with specialists from RUP "Vitebskenergo".

In total, more than a dozen design, construction, and electrical engineering organizations were involved in the project. The project consists of three parts. The main construction objects are the hydro-node, consisting of four hydro-units with a capacity of 10 MW each, the power output scheme to the energy system, and the reservoir. Buildings and structures of the hydro-node, the spillway dam, the earth dam, the 110 kV open switchgear, and the navigation lock have been built. The expected annual electricity generation will be 138 million kWh. Approximately 30 people will operate the new station.
