February 9, Vitebsk / Olga Bogacheva - BELTA /. Over 1.3 thousand names of servicemen who died during the Great Patriotic War in the Vitebsk region were identified in 2009. This was reported to a BELTA correspondent by the ideological work department of the Vitebsk Regional Military Commissariat.
Field search operations with excavations were carried out in the Vitebsk, Dubrovno, Liozno, Verkhnedvinsk, Lepel, Gorodok and Polotsk districts. A total of 30 search sites were worked, where 5 medallions, the "For Courage" medal of a sergeant from Tula, two F-1 grenades, about 300 cartridges, aircraft fragments, and 10 other relics were found. In addition, the remains of 322 servicemen were exhumed. Ceremonies of solemn reburial of fallen heroes with the participation of representatives of local authorities, students, clergy, and veterans were held in the village of Vymno in the Vitebsk region, as well as in Babinovichi and Staroye Selo in the Liozno region.
Funds for perpetuating the memory of soldiers who died during the war, and for the improvement and repair of military burials, were allocated from the local budget in each region. In addition, Br430 million was allocated from the regional budget for these purposes. The funds were used to reconstruct and repair military burials in the Liozno, Gorodok, Braslav, Tolochin, Dokshitsy, Shumilino, and Orsha districts, and to open a monument in honor of participants in combat operations in other countries in Lepel, and monuments to countrymen who died during the Great Patriotic War in the villages of Ivanovskshchina and Khoroshki in the Glubokoye district.
Schoolchildren and students took the most active part in perpetuating the memory of the Fatherland's defenders and victims of wars during the holidays. The children participated in bike rides to places of military glory, improved the visited sites, and learned more about the events of the war years. Traditional events for schoolchildren included lessons of courage, "Let's Remember Everyone by Name" rallies, thematic lessons, intellectual competitions, and meetings with veterans. It is noteworthy that the past year in the Vitebsk region passed without incidents of vandalism at military burials and other memorial sites. -0-
