Taras from Parnassus "landed" in Gorodok
To the regional holiday of rural workers "Dazhynki - 2014", a sculpture of the hero of the famous Belarusian poem "Taras on Parnassus" appeared in the square of the town of Horadok. The authors of the composition are Vitebsk sculptors Ivan Kazak and Sergey Sotnikov.
This is the second composition in the town dedicated to this work and its author, Konstantin Verenitsyn, a native of the village of Ostrovlyany in the Horadok district. Previously, a memorial stone with a plaque resembling open book pages with text was installed near the museum. By the way, as philologists note, the poem is written in the Vitebsk dialect of that time.
The new monument also imitates an open book, from the pages of which Taras himself emerges. The image of the cheerful folk hero was immediately liked – everyone tried to take pictures with him.
Near the House of Crafts, the "Town of Masters" was also located at the festival-fair. Folk craftsmen from all regions of the Vitebsk region brought their products. Latgalian artisans also came to the holiday. Maria and Janis Saikovski from Daugavpils presented glazed ceramics, and a craftswoman from Rezekne presented knitted mittens made of sheep wool.
"There was also our bread, cheese, smoked bacon – it was all bought up instantly," says a woman who introduced herself simply as Valentina.
This is her first time in Horadok, but she has been to the Vitebsk region many times, visiting Polotsk for the "Slavianski Bazaar in Vitebsk". She really likes Belarus: it's beautiful, and the goods sell well.
More than a thousand artists took part in the harvest festival. They performed on the main stage of "Dazhynki" and other concert venues located in different parts of the city. From morning till late at night, songs could be heard on the streets, local residents and guests sang along with folk groups, and danced to the melodies of the polka, "Lyavonikha", and "Kryzhachka".
