Tons of cranberries and thousands of cranes: a unique festival was held in Miory

Miory region is a unique place. And this is not just for the sake of beautiful words. The region has a large raised bog, one of the largest in Europe. Here, during the autumn migration, over four thousand grey cranes stop to rest. The bog also grows a delicious and unusually healthy berry - cranberries. They ripen in September, just when the cranes arrive. That is why in September, guests from all over the country flock to the small but cozy town of Miory for an ecological festival.

They head to the ecological trail built in the "Yelnya" reserve, to the suburban observation decks, where one can observe cranes with binoculars or (if lucky) without them. Guests also hurry to the Miory peninsula, which is hidden behind the long embankment of the local lake.

Here there are festivities, songs, dances, and at the unique farmsteads, hosts treat guests to various delicacies. Cranberries are sold on the peninsula - there are so many of them, and they look like a scattering of rubies. Miory resident Vyacheslav Voytovich offers a liter of healthy berries for five rubles, and brought about 30 liters to the festival.

- And this is just the beginning, as the harvesting season has just started, - clarifies Vyacheslav. - I myself love these berries and stock them up for future use. I freeze them and then make kissel and morsel. Delicious!

Irina and Sergey Dementyev also brought about 30 kilograms of ruby berries:

- We still have about seven buckets at home! We sold the same amount. We collected them together, with our son. As a result, a tangible addition to the family budget.

Miory resident Oksana Moskalenko prepared over 500 painted gingerbread cookies with motifs of her native region for the festival. Her initiative to bake was financially supported in the region, and the girl continues to delight with exclusive products.
The brand of the Miory district was conceived by the local authorities. And they hit the mark with it. Tourists in huge busespeople come to Miory to see the cranes, enjoy the cranberries, and generally soak up the festive atmosphere.

- We, educators and schoolchildren from the Polotsk district, were brought by two chartered buses, with 40 people in each. Imagine the excitement! We bought some cranberries and are delighted with the festival, shares the director of School No. 10, Larisa Sukhanova.

The festival has become an integral part of the district's life and is being held for the 11th time, notes the chairman of the district council of deputies, Valery Drabo:

- Cranberries have been present in the Miory region for centuries. For some, it has become a business, for others, a solace, when its collection is a tribute to tradition. Although this berry is not used so widely in nutrition, we always have it in stock. And the farmsteads are a real reflection of the flavor and way of life of different corners of the district. They represent the collective work of cultural workers, agrarians, educators, and representatives of other spheres. Rural executive committees have become coordinators in this matter. The festival is combined with the district's harvest festival for the first time. The combination turned out to be worthy and successful!

The national cuisine club "Tsvetsinskiye prismaki" of the Zautievsky rural council prepared dishes with local flavor for the guests of the ecological festival. These include dumplings with souls, nalistniki, draniki, khvorost, baked meat, and fish. Crispy piglets lay whole on huge platters – enough to impress even the most discerning gourmets.

- At the club, we try to preserve ancient recipes, emphasizes the head hostess, head of the national cuisine club, Zinaida Kadushko. - Television and major media outlets come to Tsvetsino for authenticity. We will surprise, feed, and teach everyone to cook!

There are many children at the festival. They came with parents and friends, taking pictures with life-size figures of a crane and a crane maiden. Andrey Pishchulenok, a student of Secondary School No. 3 named after Egor Tomko, has just won a prize in an entertainment contest:

- I come here every year, I like it very much. Various treats, contests, music, national craftsv. We were taught in school that there is a huge raised bog in our area, and thousands of beautiful cranes stop there. I've seen them, I'm proud of the local attractions!

The festival summed up the results of the trade union cranberry harvesting competition among work collectives. The leaders of the harvesting campaign and the best hosts for landscaping were awarded, and song and music ensembles from the Vitebsk region performed with a cultural program. If only the cranes knew what a celebration was being organized in Mory in their honor!
