The center of Vitebsk is shifting to Victory Square
April 25, Vitebsk / Olga Bogacheva - BELTA /. All cultural and mass events in Vitebsk will now be held on Victory Square, which will soon become the central city square of the regional center, the deputy chairman of the Vitebsk City Executive Committee, Leonid Kovalev, told a BELTA correspondent.
Currently, landscaping work has begun here, and a project is being developed in parallel. The volume of investments required for these purposes is still being calculated.
As Leonid Kovalev noted, information about the start of work that appeared in some media outlets caused concern among citizens living in nearby houses. However, during a meeting held the day before between representatives of local authorities and the public, mutual understanding was reached. "People received full explanations firsthand," the interlocutor emphasized. For example, everyone was concerned about the fate of green spaces. There were accusations that they were being destroyed. Meanwhile, each tree, and there are 71 of them, has been counted. Now they are being dug up with roots using special technologies and transplanted to the park named after the Soviet Army. People have not been forgotten either. To reduce noise during festive celebrations, thermal renovation of houses on Lenin Street has already begun, and in all apartments of houses closest to the square, double-glazed windows will be installed free of charge at the request of citizens, and balconies will be glazed. Courtyard areas will also be landscaped, the deputy chairman of the city executive committee said.
Victory Square in Vitebsk is the largest in Belarus and one of the largest in Europe, its size is over 72 thousand sq.m. The number of people it can accommodate is 250 thousand people. Now, in accordance with its new status, not only celebrations dedicated to Victory Day and the liberation of Belarus from the Nazi invaders will be held here, but also all other significant cultural events.
Freedom Square will also not be left without attention. In accordance with the further development plan of the regional center, it is included in the historical part of the city, and it is planned to restore the Holy Nicholas Church here. -0-
