Recently, researchers of the Braslav Lakes National Park recorded an amphibian species atypical for the region – the European pond turtle, estimated by specialists to be approximately 10 years old.

According to Valery Mityun, a leading researcher at the National Park, the European pond turtle prefers the southern regions of Belarus. However, scientists believe that its habitats have also remained in the northern regions, where this species has survived since ancient times. Turtles are among the most ancient fauna animals. They look almost the same as they did 200 million years ago.

In our country, the European pond turtle is a rare species and is listed in the Red Book, belonging to Category III of national conservation significance.
