Scientists of Vitebsk State Medical University have developed a comprehensive system for diagnosing infections
January 26, Vitebsk / Sergey Kochetov - BELTA /. A comprehensive system for diagnosing infections has been developed by scientists at the Vitebsk State Medical University, Vitaly Okulich, Candidate of Medical Sciences, Associate Professor of the Department of Clinical Microbiology at the university, told a BELTA correspondent.
The diagnostic system is designed to identify and determine the antibiotic sensitivity of the most significant pathogens of infectious diseases. The development allows for improving the quality and increasing the accuracy of disease diagnosis, which in turn enables the prescription of adequate therapeutic and preventive measures, and the development of effective antimicrobial therapy regimens. "High-quality diagnostics make it possible to reduce the length of a patient's hospital stay and, accordingly, reduce the cost of treatment, while the quality of care is improved by more accurately identifying the infectious agent and its sensitivity to a particular antibiotic," Vitaly Okulich emphasized.
The comprehensive diagnostic system includes seven test systems developed by Vitebsk scientists, an enzyme immunoassay analyzer, and software. Material taken from a patient undergoes testing using a test system, a computer program analyzes the test results, and then provides a result that identifies the causative agent of the disease and its antibiotic sensitivity. The comprehensive system is adapted to work in the conditions of domestic healthcare, meaning the system conducts testing and determines the sensitivity of microorganisms to those antibiotics that are registered by the Ministry of Health of Belarus. In addition, the use of domestic reagents in the production of test systems allows for reducing their cost by approximately 3 times compared to foreign analogues.
The development by Vitebsk scientists has been registered with the Ministry of Health. Serial production of test systems is planned to be organized at RUP "BelVitunipharm" for bacteriological laboratories of medical institutions at both the district and republican levels. -0-
