A criminal case has been initiated into the death of a reckless driver in Shumilino

A criminal case has been initiated over the death of a reckless driver in Shumilino, official representative of the Investigative Committee of the Republic of Belarus for the Vitebsk region Inna Gorbacheva told a BELTA correspondent.

According to the head of the information and public relations department of the Internal Affairs Directorate of the Vitebsk Regional Executive Committee Andrey Semenikhin, on June 28, around eleven o'clock in the evening, a 41-year-old unemployed resident of the Polotsk district, driving a "Renault-Laguna" car, on the Vitebsk-Polotsk highway, failed to comply with the repeated lawful demands of traffic police officers to stop and continued to move at a speed of over 180 km/h towards the urban settlement of Shumilino. Traffic police officers began pursuit with a flashing red-blue beacon and a siren activated.

In order to stop the offender in Shumilino, at the intersection of Lunacharskogo and Yubileynaya streets, on an illuminated section of the road, a roadblock was set up in the form of a "DAF" truck with a semi-trailer. Operational vehicles of the Shumilino District Department of Internal Affairs were involved, which were located on both sides of the highway with blue beacons and low beams illuminating the "DAF" truck. However, upon entering this intersection, the driver of the "Renault-Laguna" car did not stop and collided with the semi-trailer, sustaining bodily injuries. The man died in an ambulance on the way to the Central District Hospital.

Based on the fact of the road traffic accident, the Shumilino District Department of the Investigative Committee initiated a criminal case under Part 2 of Article 317 of the Criminal Code of the Republic of Belarus. As a result of the initial investigative actions, the investigation has sufficient grounds to believe that no violation of current legislation and departmental instructions is found in the actions of law enforcement officers.
