Criminal cases have been initiated over high-profile road traffic accidents in Vitebsk, the official representative of the Investigative Committee Department for the Vitebsk Region, Inna Gorbacheva, told a BELTA correspondent.

A criminal case has been initiated under Part 2 of Article 317 (violation of traffic rules or vehicle operation, causing death by negligence) of the Criminal Code of Belarus over a road traffic accident that occurred on July 21, 2013, involving an ambulance. Around three o'clock in the morning, a 59-year-old ambulance driver, while driving along Zamkovaya Street, hit a 23-year-old unemployed local resident who was crossing the roadway outside a pedestrian crossing; the latter died at the scene from the injuries sustained.

"The investigation has documentary evidence that the driver of the vehicle was sober. The car was en route to a call to provide emergency medical assistance and was moving without activated flashing beacons and audible alarm," Inna Gorbacheva informed. Currently, necessary forensic examinations are being conducted, the full picture of the incident is being reconstructed, and measures are being taken to identify eyewitnesses to the accident.

Also, a criminal case under Part 2 of Article 317 of the Criminal Code has been initiated against a 31-year-old taxi driver. The accident occurred on July 19 around midnight on Stroiteley Avenue. While driving a Nissan Almera, the man hit a married couple crossing the roadway outside a pedestrian crossing. The woman was taken to the hospital with injuries of varying severity; her husband died at the scene of the incident.

"No preventive measure was taken against the driver. It has been reliably established that he was sober at the time of the accident," Inna Gorbacheva noted. Currently, investigative actions and other measures are being carried out to collect evidence in this criminal case.
