Potato yield in the Vitebsk region is 20% higher than last year

Урожайность картофеля в Витебской области на 20% превышает прошлогоднюю

Potato yield in the Vitebsk region exceeds last year's by more than 20%, as reported by the Committee for Agriculture and Food of the Regional Executive Committee.

More than 17% of the "second bread" areas have already been harvested in the region, with over 22 thousand tons of tubers dug up at an average yield of 346.7 centners per hectare. This is above the national average and exceeds last year's result for Vitebsk agrarians (on the same date, the figure was 283.4 centners per hectare).

Among the organizations in the region, the agrarians of the Tolochin Cannery achieved the best results in potato cultivation, harvesting 423 centners of tubers per hectare. "Tolochin specialists achieve such an impressive harvest due to the high technological sophistication of the process. They maximally adhere to the recommendations of agronomic science throughout the cultivation cycle, from crop rotation and soil cultivation to plant protection, paying great attention to the quality of planting material and variety selection," the committee emphasized. According to specialists, potato yield in the Vitebsk region is increasing year by year due to the fact that large-scale enterprises are engaged in growing the crop.

This year, the region plans to obtain about 90 thousand tons of "second bread". In addition to the traditional stocking of products in stabilization funds (approximately 15 thousand tons), potatoes are actively sold to the public at weekend fairs and supplied to domestic and foreign retail chains. "The same Tolochin Cannery concludes direct contracts with Russian trading companies and supplies its products to the market of the neighboring country. Moreover, modern potato storage facilities of the enterprise are equipped with special lines for washing and polishing tubers, so these products can satisfy the demands of the most discerning buyers," the committee noted.
