In Bogushevsk, a memorial plaque has been unveiled in memory of a pilot who died at an air show in Poland
A memorial plaque in memory of pilot Alexander Marfitsky has been unveiled in the urban settlement of Bogushevsk, Sennensky District. In August 2009, together with Alexander Zhuravlevich, he was at the controls of a Belarusian Su-27 fighter jet that crashed during an air show in Radom, Poland.
The aircraft could have crashed into numerous spectators, but the pilots did not eject; instead, they tried to steer it as far as possible from the settlement and crowds of people. They perished, but at the cost of their lives, they saved others. Both were posthumously awarded the Order "For Personal Courage".
Colonel Marfitsky, Deputy Commander of the Air Force and Air Defense Forces' Western Operational-Tactical Command for Aviation, was 53 years old. He was born in Bogushevsk, graduated from school there, and then left to enroll in the Kharkiv Higher Military Aviation School for Pilots. The memorial plaque was installed on the house on Dzerzhinsky Street, where he spent his childhood and youth. It is planned to name one of the streets in Bogushevsk after Marfitsky.
