This year, 16 workers died and 48 were injured at production facilities in the Vitebsk region.

To make industrial activities as safe as possible and eliminate workplace injuries. This should be facilitated by the Occupational Health and Safety Management System (OHSMS), the implementation of which was discussed at a meeting of the regional executive committee.

Over the past six years, OHSMS has been operating in more than 4.4 thousand organizations in the Vitebsk region, which is almost 68% of the total number. Effective work on labor protection is ensured by the presence of specialists responsible for these issues at enterprises. As of today, their staffing is 99.5%.

As a result of industrial accidents, 16 people died and 48 people received serious injuries in the first 9 months of this year (for the same period in 2016, the figures were 19 and 70, respectively).

The main reasons are the violation of labor and industrial discipline by the victims, allowing work without training and knowledge testing, and involving people in work outside their specialty. No fatalities or serious injuries occurred in Gluboksky, Dokshitsky, Rossonky, Ushachsky, and Chashniksky districts.

The number of accidents due to appearing at work while intoxicated has increased

It is worth noting that the number of accidents due to appearing at work while in a state of alcohol, drug, or toxic intoxication has increased. 606 people were dismissed for being drunk at the workplace. Over the past three years, 96 people have died in production (23 this year), with illness being the sole cause.

As part of improving working conditions, preventing industrial injuries, and occupational diseases, measures are being taken for technical re-equipment and modernization. This year, more than 60 million rubles have been spent on these purposes. 673 workplaces with harmful and hazardous working conditions, employing over 1 thousand people, have been brought into compliance with sanitary and hygienic standards. Working conditions have been improved at another 385 workplaces (employing 678 people).

Over 8 thousand labor protection violations have been identified at enterprises and organizations in the region

This year, nearly 550 inspections have been carried out to ensure compliance with legislation. Over 8,000 labor protection violations have been identified. 827 officials and 390 employers have been held administratively liable, with the total amount of fines amounting to 156.3 thousand rubles.

Chairman of the Regional Executive Committee Nikolay Sherstnev noted that people should not suffer injuries and maiming at work, let alone die. The problem is also that not only the individual suffers, but an entire family that loses its breadwinner.

Systematic work and the establishment of accountability measures will help prevent tragic incidents. A strong leader controls every production site, does not overlook any minor detail, and knows where the situation requires correction, emphasized Nikolay Nikolayevich.
