An Alley of Heroes of the Soviet Union, natives of the district, was opened in Gorodok

В Городке открыли аллею Героев Советского Союза – уроженцев района
13 stands with the names and photos of fellow countrymen who were awarded high state honors during the Great Patriotic War and in peacetime have appeared along the sidewalk on Bagration Street in Gorodok. Each of the steles has a QR code that allows anyone with a mobile phone and internet access to obtain comprehensive information about the person, view archival photos and documents. The object was created on the initiative of the district executive committee, the regional branch of the public association "Belarusian Peace Foundation" and the local "School of Peace."

— The creation of the alley is one of the most important events of the patriotic project "Heroes of the Soviet Union – Our Countrymen," aimed at preserving the historical memory of the exploits of Gorodok residents, — said the chairman of the district executive committee, Petr Korobach. — Our region is one of the most affected by the fascist occupation – almost everything that was built and created by human hands was wiped off the face of the earth, 306 villages were destroyed, thousands of Red Army soldiers, partisans, and civilians died. There are 89 military and civilian burial sites in the Gorodok region, where 31,000 fallen soldiers rest.

Representatives of regional and district authorities, law enforcement officers, and the public participated in the grand opening of the alley.

— Today we remember people who are no longer with us. The memory of their heroic deeds lives on in the hearts of grateful descendants. This alley is needed so that future generations know who conquered freedom and peace, — noted the Chairman of the Regional Council of Deputies Vladimir Terentyev. — Each person immortalized here is an example of selfless devotion to the homeland and native region. All of them are worthy of admiration. For example, Alexander Sobolevsky was the first medic in the history of the USSR to receive the Hero Star in peacetime. Alexey Semenkov was the commander of the Li-2 aircraft crew that delivered the act of unconditional surrender of Nazi Germany from Berlin to Moscow.

Sofia Naumova, the niece of Hero of the Soviet Union Iosif Bumagin, attended the ceremony. She thanked the honored guests for taking care of immortalizing the memory of their grandfathers and great-grandfathers who defended the freedom of their native land, and expressed hope that Belarus will never again become an arena of hostilities.

For heroism and courage during the Great Patriotic War, 8 natives of Gorodok region were awarded the title of Hero of the Soviet Union, and two more received the highest award in peacetime. In addition, two are full Cavaliers of the Order of Glory, and one is a Hero of the Russian Federation.
