A requiem rally "The ringing of your hearts will not fall silent in our memory" was held in Gorodok
The Chairman of the Regional Council of Deputies Vladimir Terentyev, a representative of the regional structure of the public association "Patriots of Belarus" Olga Matsyus, and representatives of the local authorities joined representatives of labor and educational collectives, and public organizations of the city who came to honor the memory of civilians, lay flowers and wreaths. Vladimir Terentyev noted:
– Of the 9,200 settlements destroyed and burned by the German invaders in Belarus during the Great Patriotic War, over 5,295 were destroyed along with their inhabitants or part of the population, including mothers and infants, infirm elderly people and disabled people during punitive operations; 186 villages could not be revived. The result of the Nazi policy of genocide and "scorched earth" in Belarus was more than 2 million people destroyed during three years of occupation. According to updated data, every 3rd resident of Belarus perished.
Gorodok district ranks third in the region in terms of the number of villages affected during the war, after Verkhnedvinsk and Vitebsk districts. 305 of them were completely or partially burned down, 13 of them met the fate of Khatyn: they were burned down with their inhabitants and were not rebuilt after the war.
The memorial features six information stands detailing the occupation regime, the Gorodok ghetto, and the prisoner-of-war camp located on the territory of the former agricultural college in Gorodok. It also covers the extermination of the population, displays a map of the burned villages in the district, and contains the remains of about 2,000 residents from 26 settlements in the Gorodok district who were shot by Nazi invaders in 1941-1943. The memorial plaques immortalize 221 surnames of the fallen, identified through research.
By holding this event, the residents of Gorodok confirmed that they remember and will always honor the memory of the fallen, preserving the historical truth about the years of the Great Patriotic War and the people's feat. During the requiem rally, a district patriotic campaign to collect particles of earth from the sites of burned villages was launched. The earth will be placed in a capsule and buried on June 22 at the memorial in Vorobyovy Gory.
