A college student in Horadok has been sentenced to 8 years in prison for the possession and distribution of spice, the prosecutor of Horadok District, Mikhail Pateev, told a BELTA correspondent.

The case of distributing a particularly dangerous psychotropic substance was heard in the Horadok District Court.

The incident occurred in the dormitory of the Horadok State Vocational Lyceum of Agricultural Production named after I.V. Doroshchenko in February 2014. Two second-year students were taken to the intensive care unit of the Horadok District Hospital after using spice.

"One of the students, who was a minor at the time, claimed during the proceedings that he found a packet made from a 100-ruble note in the locker room of the college ice rink, inside which was a substance that, in his opinion, looked like tobacco. He carried it with him for a day, then decided to try smoking it. And he offered his groupmate to join him - he was scared to do it alone, as he claimed. As a result, they each took 1-2 puffs in the dormitory washroom. After some time, they returned there because they felt unwell. The cleaner noticed them. An ambulance was called, and their lives were saved by the prompt intervention of medics," explained Mikhail Pateev.

The defendant in the criminal case (a native of Shumilino District) was accused of acquiring, possessing, and selling a particularly dangerous psychotropic substance on the territory of the educational institution (Part 1, Part 3 of Article 328 of the Criminal Code). As a result, the young man was found guilty and received the minimum sentence - 8 years of imprisonment with serving the term in a general regime correctional colony (at the time of sentencing, he was already an adult).

"A young man from a complete family, which is not dysfunctional. His parents are ordinary villagers, both are employed. As the defendant's fellow students who testified in the case said, he simply committed a foolish act, not realizing the possible consequences, almost killing his friend and himself. For which he will now spend his youth in prison," concluded Mikhail Pateev.
