A schoolgirl is on trial in Lepel for allegedly suffocating her child
In Lepel, a 16-year-old schoolgirl is on trial for giving birth to a child and then strangling it. The tragedy occurred two years ago.
The school student, whose pregnancy went unnoticed, gave birth at home. Her parents suspected something was wrong when they noticed their daughter was clearly unwell. They called an ambulance.
Doctors delivered the shocking news: the eleventh-grader had postpartum complications. Investigators were dispatched to the scene. The lifeless body of the infant was found on the balcony. The mother insisted she remembered nothing.
Andrei Mlechko, prosecutor of the Vitebsk Regional Prosecutor's Office, states:
– The investigation was prolonged due to the need for numerous examinations. Ultimately, it was established that the newborn baby died from mechanical asphyxiation. Doctors deemed the prospective mother fully sane; the postpartum depression theory was not confirmed. This means the sixteen-year-old girl was fully aware of her actions. It should be noted that she had a positive reputation from all sides, as did her parents.
The verdict in this high-profile case will be delivered today. Throughout this time, the accused has been at liberty and gave birth to another child this past spring.
