In the Liozno district, with the participation of a delegation from Russia, the memory of soldiers who died in the Great Patriotic War and defended the region from invaders was honored.

The rally dedicated to Victory Day was attended by the district leadership, representatives of the Vitebsk branch of the Belarusian Chamber of Commerce and Industry, public associations, local residents, and schoolchildren. Among the honored guests was the Deputy Chairman of the Legislative Assembly of the Novosibirsk Region, Maiis Mamedov, whose uncle died in hand-to-hand combat while liberating the Liozno district. This is his second visit to Belarusian land, but if the previous visit was official, the current one is purely family-related.

"I would like to thank everyone who lives on this sacred land. I am grateful to the leadership of the district, region, and country for raising this country to an unprecedented height after such devastation. This is solely the merit of the Belarusian people. A terrible tragedy occurred in 1941-1945. Belarus twice bore such a powerful blow: during the offensive and retreat (of German troops. - Note BELTA). Nevertheless, the Soviet people, the Belarusian people endured and defeated this fascist plague. I am grateful that they found the soldier (my uncle) who voluntarily enlisted in the army at the age of 21. He was wounded twice, refused to go home, deciding to fight to the end. In 1944, on this sacred land, in hand-to-hand combat, having destroyed several fascist vermin, he died," said Maiis Mamedov.

The guest noted that visiting the Belarusian land, the Liozno district, is a sacred duty for him. "I am very pleased that there are such friendly relations between Belarus, Russia, and Azerbaijan. One might say, we are one people," said Maiis Mamedov. "The task of those living now, of the younger generation, is to preserve the memory, so as never to allow such a terrible tragedy. We must do everything to make this beautiful land flourish."

The military burial site in Chernyshi is the second largest in the district after the burial site in the agro-town of Krynki (there are 90 such sites in the region). More than 3.4 thousand soldiers and officers of the Red Army, who died in 1943-1944 during the liberation of the district from the Nazi invaders, are buried here. Students from the M.T. Linkov Krynki Secondary School are involved in the improvement of this site. Search operations are ongoing in the district to identify previously unknown names of fallen soldiers: 345 names were identified last year, and over 200 have been identified since the beginning of this year.

"Our grandfathers, great-grandfathers showed us how they united, won, and in the post-war period, rebuilt the country. And this is a vivid example of courage, heroism, unity. On the territory of our district, every second person perished. In total, more than 32 thousand soldiers and officers of the Soviet army died liberating the Liozno district. Unfortunately, today, 6,240 people remain unknown," noted the Chairman of the District Executive Committee, Ivan Fyodorov. "A great deal of work is being done in the district to perpetuate the memory of the fallen. And the war will truly not be over until the memory of the last hero is perpetuated." -0-
