The only cemetery of Soviet Army officers in Belarus will be put in order in the Liozno district
February 16, Liozno / Diana Kurilo - BELTA /. The only officers' cemetery in Belarus, located in the village of Stasevo (Liozno district), will be renovated this year. This was announced today at a working meeting in Liozno by the military commissar of the Vitebsk Regional Military Commissariat, Igor Martynov, reports a BELTA correspondent.
182 officers of the Soviet Army who died during Operation Bagration to liberate Belarus from the Nazi invaders are buried in the village of Stasevo. Over time, 126 gravestones have become unusable and will need to be replaced. Br170 million is required for these purposes. According to Igor Martynov, after renovation, the military memorial can be included in the list of sites for visits by foreign delegations, as it is the only burial site where only officers are interred.
In addition to this cemetery, 83 military burials in the Liozno district require improvement. Br700 million is needed for these purposes. This year, Br500 million has been allocated from the budget for the renovation of graves and monuments of Soviet soldiers buried in the region. The military commissar proposed to hold a regional субботник (voluntary work day) and earn the missing funds to restore the graves of fallen heroes.
The Chairman of the Vitebsk Regional Executive Committee, Alexander Kosinets, supported Igor Martynov's proposal to hold a субботник and include the officers' memorial in the list of sites for visits by delegations. -0-
