In Novopolotsk, zones will appear where bicycles will displace cars

Novopolotsk has begun creating a citywide bicycle traffic scheme. City council deputies have called on their fellow citizens to be more environmentally friendly and, where possible, to do without their usual cars.

It is noteworthy that 4 years ago, Novopolotsk undertook to develop and improve living standards while simultaneously reducing the environmental burden, which resulted in the development of the city's sustainable development strategy "Local Agenda-21". One of its specific practices was the creation of an effective cycling infrastructure network.

It is expected that by 2018, Novopolotsk will be completely covered by a web of bicycle paths.

As an argument for substantial investments: specialists have calculated that the construction of one square meter of bicycle path in the city is 20 times cheaper than a road. The difference in maintenance costs for the surface is approximately the same. Therefore, in the near future, Novopolotsk will have zones with minimal car traffic.
