This year marks the 175th anniversary of the founding of the Vitebsk Teachers' Seminary
August 23, Minsk / Anna Gromyko - BELTA /. This year marks the 175th anniversary of the founding of the Vitebsk Teachers' Seminary.
The seminary was established in 1834 on the initiative of the curator of the Belarusian Educational District, Grigory Kartashevsky, as a replacement for the Vilnius Teachers' Seminary, which was closed along with the Vilnius University in 1832. It was the first specialized educational institution in Belarus that trained teachers for parish schools, preparatory classes of gymnasiums, and district schools. The gymnasium was headed by Oglblin, the director (manager) of the Lancaster schools of the Belarusian Educational District.
At the Vitebsk Teachers' Seminary, the period of study was 3-4 years. Children of nobles, townspeople, ober-officers, and Orthodox priests were admitted. 28 gymnasium students were fully supported by the state, and there were also 23 scholarships. The scope of the curriculum was close to the program of a district school. Russian language, arithmetic, history of Russia and the Grand Duchy of Lithuania were taught at the gymnasium. Some students also studied music and singing. In their free time, the seminarians were obliged to attend Russian language and geography classes at the Vitebsk Men's Gymnasium.
During its existence, the Vitebsk Teachers' Seminary trained 68 teachers.
In 1839, it was closed due to lack of funds. -0-
